Sigiriya, often referred to as the “Eighth Wonder of the World,” is a magnificent ancient rock fortress located in the central Matale District. Built by King Kashyapa in the 5th century AD, this UNESCO World Heritage Site features a large rock plateau rising 200 meters above the surrounding jungle. The rock was transformed into a palace, adorned with gardens, ponds, and frescoes. Visitors can climb the rock via a series of staircases, which lead past the famous “Lion’s Gate” and the ancient frescoes, to a summit that offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. The advanced irrigation systems and artistic achievements make Sigiriya an architectural marvel.
